The North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES), an intergovernmental science organization, was established in 1992 to promote and coordinate marine research in the North Pacific and its adjacent seas. Its present members are Canada, Japan, People's Republic of China, Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States of America. FUTURE (Forecasting and Understanding Trends, Uncertainty and Responses of North Pacific Marine Ecosystems ) is an integrative Science Program undertaken by the member nations and affiliates of PICES to understand how marine ecosystems in the North Pacific respond to climate change and human activities, to forecast ecosystem status based on a contemporary understanding of how nature functions, and to communicate new insights to its members, governments, stakeholders and the public. • William (Bill) Pearcy, 1929-2025
PICES would like to share the sad news that a member of the PICES family, Bill Pearcy, has passed away. Bill was active in PICES in the earliest days of the Organization and became the third Wooster Award winner in 2003.
He was a professor in the Oceanography Department at Oregon State University, USA for several decades, advising over 30 graduate students, and was a productive, pioneering scientist in fisheries (particularly salmon) oceanography. As Warren Wooster noted in his tribute to Bill on receiving the Wooster Award “[Bill’s work] has exemplified the spirit of PICES where fishery science is intimately linked with the other disciplines necessary for ecosystem studies - meteorology and climatology, oceanography of the several flavors (physical, chemical, biological) and ecology in the broader sense.” He leaves a lasting legacy. More information about Bill’s life and career can be found here Volume 12 Number 1 and obituary details here https://ceoas.oregonstate.edu/memory.
