FUTURE (Forecasting and Understanding Trends, Uncertainty and Responses of North Pacific Marine Ecosystems ) is an integrative Science Program undertaken by the member nations and affiliates of PICES to understand how marine ecosystems in the North Pacific respond to climate change and human activities, to forecast ecosystem status based on a contemporary understanding of how nature functions, and to communicate new insights to its members, governments, stakeholders and the public. PICES was shocked and immensely saddened this week to hear of the unexpected death of Dan Lew, following a short illness. Dan graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a B.S. in Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics.
He was an applied economist with NOAA, at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, from 2003. Dan was an active member of PICES for several years, serving as the co-Chair of WG41 on Marine Ecosystem Services from 2017 to 2021 and a member of the current WG49 Climate Extremes and Coastal Impacts in the Pacific which began in 2021 and is ongoing. He was also active in promoting PICES and ICES leadership in the UN Decade. His colleagues at PICES remember a warm and inspiring colleague, hard working, and encouraging and supportive of early career scientists and co-Chairs alike. The PICES community, all across the Pacific, mourns his loss, but knows that his significant contributions will be remembered and will persist. Our heartfelt condolences to his wife, family, friends and colleagues.
