PICES 2014 Annual Meeting Information and Presentations

General Information

The North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) announces its 2014 Annual Meeting to be held October 16-26, 2014, at the Expo Hall in Yeosu, Republic of Korea. The meeting is hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), in coordination with the PICES Secretariat. Local arrangements are made by Yeosu City, Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), and the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI).

For more than two decades, PICES has been the forum for scientists to develop a better understanding of North Pacific ecosystem structure and functions and a place to reflect on what changes are occurring. Two integrative scientific programs have been at the core of PICES activities: CCCC (Climate Change and Carrying Capacity) and FUTURE (Forecasting and Understanding Trends, Uncertainty and Responses of North Pacific Marine Ecosystems). While they have advanced our knowledge of the patterns and mechanisms of ecosystem change in the North Pacific, many unknowns remain. FUTURE is developing a predictive capability for North Pacific ecosystem change, but many fundamental scientific questions remain that are beyond its scope. PICES-2014 is an opportunity for a diverse scientific community to assess the current understanding of marine ecosystems in the North Pacific, to broadly discuss scientific questions that are not being adequately addressed, and to identify the fundamental scientific questions that remain to be answered.

    Iris E. Hendriks, Melissa Chierici and Carlos M. Duarte
    Pathways of Arctic Ocean acidification

    Iris Hendriks defended her PhD on dispersal of bivalve larvae and hydrodynamics at the University of Groningen working at NIOO-KNAW, CEME (now NIOZ), the Netherlands, in 2004. Since then she has been working in Spain, for the Spanish Research Council and the University of the Balearic Islands at IMEDEA (Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies), Mallorca. Moving south has not prevented her from tackling a wide range of subjects, over a wide range of latitudes. The main focus of her post-doctorate research has been on seagrass meadows, through their interaction with hydrodynamics; evaluating particle retention and wave attenuation. But she also examined the chemical ecosystem-engineering role of vegetation through modification of the carbonate system by primary production and possible facilitation of calcification for associated fauna under future scenarios of ocean acidification. This last subject has brought her to the Arctic to study the influence of coastal vegetation on the pH of the surrounding water as well as the direct influence of ocean acidification on the most sensitive life phase of bivalves: their larvae.

    Akihide Kasai
     High fishery production supported by complex coastal ecosystems

    Dr. Akihide Kasai is an associate professor of Field Science Education and Research Center, Kyoto University, Japan. His research interests and experience span a wide range of topics from physical oceanography to marine ecosystems in coastal areas and estuaries with observations and numerical modeling. Currently he gets involved in research groups in Coastal Ecosystem Complex project, which tries to clarify the structure of ecosystems, function of biological productivity, and mechanisms of their variability. He is also a core member of the Connectivity of Hills, Humans and Oceans (CoHHO) study, which is a new science focusing on the connectivity of marine ecosystems with forest, river and human activities, founded in the Center for the Promotion of Interdisciplinary Education and Research, Kyoto University.

    Jacquelynne King
     Looking back to go forward

    Dr. Jacquelynne (Jackie) King is a Research Scientist at the Pacific Biological Station (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) in Nanaimo, British Columbia. She received her PhD in Limnology from the University of Toronto in 1997 and began her career in marine ecology as a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Pacific Biological Station studying north Pacific regime shifts. Her current research includes climate change impacts on marine ecosystems and methods of incorporating climate variability into stock assessment advice.
    She has published research on a suite of disciplines including marine fish life history strategies, statistical methodology, climate impacts on ecosystems, ageing methodology, stock assessment, fish population dynamics and behavioural ecology. She is also Head of the Canadian Pacific Shark Research Program and has published research on age determination, migration, stock delineation and assessment of chondrichthyans. Within PICES, she was Chair of the Study Group “Fisheries and Ecosystem Responses to Recent Regime Shifts", a member of the Climate Forcing and Marine Ecosystem Response Task Team of the CCCC Program, a member of Working Group 16 “Climate Change, Shifts in Fish Production, and Fisheries Management”, a member of the FUTURE Science Plan Writing Team, and a member of Joint PICES/ICES Working Group 25 “Forecasting Climate Change Impacts on Fish and Shellfish”. She is currently a member of the FUTURE COVE-Advisory Panel, the FIS Committee, the PICES/ICES Section on “Climate Change Effects on Marine Ecosystems”, the Study Group on “Socio-Ecological-Environmental Systems” and Working Group 27 “North Pacific Climate Variability and Change”. Dr. King recently was a member of the PICES Evaluation Panel responsible for the midpoint review of the FUTURE Science Program and progress made towards the FUTURE goals.

Habitat modeling is a powerful tool used to identify key factors affecting the distribution of marine organisms and underlying mechanisms, to predict optimal fishing grounds, to evaluate human impacts on ecosystems, and to project distribution shifts in the face of climate change. Given their broad application and utility, evaluation of the strengths and weakness of various modeling approaches is becoming increasingly important. Environmental data primarily come from satellite-based SST, SST gradient, SSH, Chl-a and their variation across time, and geographic features such as shelf breaks. Distribution data are collected from various sources, including ship-based line transect surveys, animal tracking, fisheries activities (log data, satellite-based fishing light distribution) and hence contain inevitable biases, including the selection of the survey line and season, tagging location of tracked animals, sample sizes, and type of the fishing activities. Biases are also inherent in the models being used – Generalized linear and additive models (GLMs and GAMs), Random Forests, boosted regression approaches, and Maximum Entropy modeling (MaxEnt). The session will examine factors causing biases, identify the direction of biases, discuss techniques for mitigating or accounting for biases, and create a best-practices guide for using habitat modeling approaches to predict the distribution of marine organisms in dynamic marine environments.

     Application of habitat models to highly mobile marine animals – Cetaceans in the North Pacific as case studies

    Dr. Hiroto Murase is a researcher of the Cetacean Resources Group at the National Research Institute of Far Seas, Japan. He received his BS in Fisheries and Wildlife Science from Oregon State University and PhD in Environmental Science from Hokkaido University. He has studied various aspects of ecology of cetaceans including spatial distribution, prey-predator relationship and ecosystem modelling. He has more than 10 years of experience in studying cetaceans both in the Antarctic and North Pacific. He has also studied various planktons and fishes using fisheries acoustics. He serves as a Japanese delegate/invited participant to the scientific committee of the International Whaling Commission. He has involved in a number of Japanese domestic and international cetacean sighting survey projects. His current research interests include the basin-scale spatial distribution of cetaceans in the North Pacific, the circumpolar spatial distribution of cetaceans in the Antarctic and the behavior study of cetaceans.

    Martin Renner
     Crossvalidating approaches to modeling habitat and distribution of seabirds at-sea

    Martin is a research scientist, working as a consultant for US Fish and Wildlife Service and US Geological Survey. He studied biology and Marine Science in Germany, New Zealand, and Canada. He received a PhD from Memorial University of Newfoundland for a study on the behavioral ecology of seabirds in the Aleutians. Subsequently he was a postdoc at the University of Washington working on seabird ecology and distribution in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Archipelago. Martin is interested in advanced algorithms for distribution modeling, community ecology and quantitative methods in seabird ecology. Current projects include a risk assessment of oil spills to seabirds in the Aleutians and the effect of climate change on the distribution and abundance of seabird communities in the eastern Bering Sea.

Many coastal and marine ecosystems, ranging from reefs to estuaries to pelagic systems, are exposed to multiple stressors, which can lead to rapid changes with significant, long-term consequences that are often difficult to reverse. Changes in ocean climate, the abundance of key species, nutrients, and other factors drive these shifts, which affect ocean food webs, habitats, and ecosystem functions and people's livelihoods and well-being. Determining indicators of ecological changes due to multiple stressors and defining reference points for those indicators are key steps for managers to avoid ecological degradation and loss of keys goods and services. Setting ecological reference points in ecological systems presents a challenge to resource managers because (a) reference points are often difficult to determine due to the complexity of natural systems, including the presence of thresholds, tipping points, and non-linearities; (b) the paucity of theoretical modeling and empirical understanding needed to address these complexities, identify ecological thresholds and develop early warning indicators means that managers must make decisions based on high levels of uncertainty; and, (c) many institutional and governance structures do not allow managers the necessary flexibility to take up this information and react within relevant timeframes. This session will address these pressing challenges, and explore promising approaches to tackling them with the goal of catalyzing new research and management innovation. In particular, we invite presentations that (i) define the conceptual basis for reference points and management objectives surrounding reference points; (ii) use theoretical, modeling and observational approaches to identify potential reference points for indicators of changes in marine ecosystems; (iii) incorporate risk and sources of error (measurement, model, process) in such analyses; (iv) discuss how reference points may be used in helping to manage marine ecosystems, specifically in relation to the decision-making process related to evaluating and deciding on acceptable levels of risk. These discussions will be guided by the FUTURE science themes, with special attention to examining climate and anthropogenic drivers of ecological change, and identifying early warning indicators to enable forecasting to avoid crossing ecological thresholds. The outcomes will contribute to the work of PICES Working Group 28 on Development of ecosystem indicators to characterize ecosystem responses to multiple stressors.

    Phil Levin
    Marine ecosystem regime shifts: Challenges and opportunities for Ecosystem-Based Management [presentation is not available]

    Phillip Levin is a Senior Scientist and leads the Ecosystem Science Program and the Nearshore Ecology Team at NOAA Fisheries’ Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, WA, USA. Dr. Levin is a community ecologist and conservation biologist who is interested In bridging the gaps between theory and practice in conservation biology and fisheries science, and developing modeling and statistical approaches to inform ecosystem-based management of marine systems. The main focus of his current work is on developing scientific tools to inform Ecosystem-based Management in the United States (and beyond). Levin has led the development of new analytical tools for characterizing ecosystem health and forecasting the cumulative effects of fisheries management and coastal zone management and climate change on living marine resources. Dr. Levin received the Department of Commerce Silver Award and NOAA’s Bronze Medal for his work on marine ecosystems, and the Seattle Aquarium’s Conservation Research Award for his work in Puget Sound. He has published over 140 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and technical reports, and his work has been featured in such news outlets as NPR, the BBC, MSBNC, The Economist, among others. Levin served as the Senior Editor of the scientific journal, Conservation Letters, the President of the Western Society of Naturalists, and has served on numerous editorial boards and scientific advisory panels. Before joining the National Marine Fisheries Service in 1999, Dr. Levin was an Assistant Professor of Marine Biology at Texas A&M University. He received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of New Hampshire in and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina.

    Tetsuo Yanagi
     Eutrophication and oligotrophication processes in the Seto Inland Sea and their relationships to the Satoumi concept

    Dr. Tetsuo Yanagi retired from the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University in 2013 and he is a professor Emeritus of Kyushu University. He was a SAP member of IGBP/START/SARCS from 1993 to 1997 and a SSC member of IGBP/LOICZ from 1993 to 1998. Plankton plays key roles in the pelagic ocean. Planktonic plants, invertebrates and the early developmental stages of vertebrates are important for trophic and population dynamics of exploited protected species; the flux of energy and material, including carbon; and as indicators of ecosystem status. Phytoplankton has been both sampled in situ and observed remotely, from satellites. Zooplankton has been collected by nets. Increasingly, optics, acoustics, and ‘omics’ are used. Sampling programs worldwide now span decades, often with ancillary data. From these, time series of plankton abundance have been created, with varying levels of taxonomic and geographic resolution. Often, such programs have been in support of fisheries management. Increasingly, however, they are also relevant to management and policy decisions affecting ecosystems and climate. In turn, such programs require justification for their continuation. Examples include the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI), the Global Alliance of Continuous Plankton Recorder Surveys (GACS), and many other plankton sampling programs worldwide. The objective of this session is to learn how time series of plankton have been, are being, and might be used to inform decisions in management and policy concerning climate, ecosystems, and fisheries. Presentations are invited on both time-tested uses of plankton time series and on novel, untested uses.

    Abigail McQuatters-Gollop
     The role of plankton time-series in managing our seas in a climate of macroecological change

    Abigail McQuatters-Gollop is a political ecologist at the Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science (SAHFOS), which operates the Continuous Plankton Recorder survey. She completed her MA in Marine Affairs and Policy at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Atmospheric Science, USA, and went on to receive a PhD from University of Plymouth, UK. She is a NERC Knowledge Exchange Fellow and is leading the implementation of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive for pelagic habitats for the UK and OSPAR. Abigail is leading development of policy-related research and science-policy integration at SAHFOS. Abigail’s work focuses on marine ecological responses to anthropogenic and climate change and the subsequent integration of results into the policy process. A key area of interest lies in the separation of climate responses in the plankton from those due to anthropogenic disturbances, and the linking of ecological state changes to manageable human drivers. Abigail is active in the ICES Working Group on Biodiversity Indicators and SCOR’s Working Group on Phytoplankton Time-Series.

    Martin Lindegren is a research scientist at the Centre for Ocean Life, National Institute of Aquatic Resources, Denmark. He received his basic training in biology, limnology and theoretical ecology at Lund University, Sweden and obtained his PhD in marine and fisheries sciences from Copenhagen University, Denmark for a modeling study on the joint effects of climate change, species interactions and fisheries on the food-web dynamics of the Baltic Sea. This work showed how climate induced changes have affected the level of fishing that fish stocks can sustain and was awarded the Sustainability Science Award of the Ecological Society of America in 2010. Recently, Martin held a fellowship at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, where he presented novel insight on the underlying mechanisms of sardine-anchovy cycles, as well as key input to sardine management. Furthermore, Martin is an active member and previous chair of an ICES expert group developing holistic ecosystem-based management practices in the Baltic Sea and beyond.

Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) sustain important commercial fisheries throughout the North Pacific Ocean and, historically, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) have supported some of the most valuable commercial fisheries in the North Atlantic Ocean. Their dynamics have been linked to fishing, climate and other commercially important demersal species. Cod are also extremely important ecologically. As predators, they have been implicated in the decline or lack of recovery of shrimp, king crab, capelin and herring. As prey, they are important forage for pinnipeds; some research implicates seal predation in the lack of recovery of some Atlantic cod stocks, and other studies implicate Pacific cod in the lack of recovery of Steller sea lions in the western Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands. Multispecies models demonstrate co-variation of cod with other important demersal species, as well as explicit tradeoffs in cod and forage fish populations with implications on the joint setting of catch quotas. Moreover, cod recruitment and spatial distribution can be strongly influenced by climate-driven changes in oceanography on decadal and shorter time scales, implying that catch levels must be adjusted for bottom-up changes in productivity. For these and other reasons, ecosystem considerations must be taken into account in cod fishery management. By drawing upon insights gained from different systems, as well as from studies of other important co-occurring demersal species (e.g., walleye pollock, small yellow croaker), this session will deepen our understanding of the roles of cod in the marine ecosystem and their implications on fishery management. Contributions are sought that consider stock identification, stock assessment and population dynamics, effects of climatology and oceanography on recruitment and biomass, trophodynamics, movements and distribution with respect to oceanographic features, multispecies models and their implications on management strategies, and other ecosystem approaches to the management, including aquaculture alternatives. Presentations are welcome from marine ecosystems in the North Pacific and North Atlantic.

    Kenneth F. Drinkwater
     Population dynamics of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and the roles of climate and fishing

    Ken Drinkwater has been involved in research on physical oceanography and climate variability and their effects on the marine ecosystem including fish and fisheries for over 35 years. The first 30 years were at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) in Dartmouth, Canada, where he worked closely with fisheries scientists and marine biologists to examine evidence for impact of climate variability on marine food webs and their processes. For his work, he was awarded the Applied Oceanography Prize from the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society. In August of 2003, he joined the Institute of Marine Research and the Bjerknes Center for Climate Research in Bergen Norway where he has continued his work on ocean climate and its marine impacts. During the International Polar Year (IPY) he led an interdisciplinary studying investigating the physical and ecological processes at the Arctic fronts in the Norwegian and Barents seas. He is a former chair of the ICES/GLOBEC Cod and Climate Change (CCC) Program is presently co-chair of the Ecosystems Studies of Sub-Arctic Seas (ESSAS) Program under IMBER. He was co-author of the the Marine System chapter in the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA) to assess possible consequences of climate change on the Arctic and is presently a review editor for the Ocean Systems chapter within Working Group II of the IPCC. He also sits on the Scientific Steering Committee of IMBER and the Scientific Steering Group of CLIVAR.

     Searching for robust management procedures for Hecate Strait Pacific cod (Gadussx macrocephalus): A data-limited stock with highly uncertain dynamics

    Dr Robyn Forrest is a Research Scientist at Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the Pacific Biological Station (PBS), Nanaimo. She obtained her PhD from the University of British Columbia in 2009 and a BSc (Hons 1, University Medal) from the University of Sydney in 2000. She has published several papers on relationships between life history, selectivity, density dependence in recruitment and fishery reference points. She is currently leading projects on understanding drivers of productivity for Pacific Cod; use of feedback simulation models to evaluate the performance of alternative management procedures under structural uncertainty; and effects of individual quotas and 100% observer coverage on spatial distribution of fishing effort. Her PhD focused on estimation of productivity parameters for data-limited species and use of ecosystem models for evaluating trade-offs in multispecies fisheries (https://circle.ubc.ca/handle/2429/3417). In February 2006, she visited the Division of Marine and Atmospheric Research at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (Hobart), where she collaborated with Drs Beth Fulton and Marie Savina on a project to compare the predictions of structurally-different ecosystem models.
    She is Canadian scientific advisor to the Commissioners of the International Pacific Halibut Commission (www.iphc.int), where she is also a member of the bilateral Scientific Review Board and the Management Strategy Advisory Board. She is program head for the Pacific Cod and Groundfish Statistics programs at PBS, where she has led stock assessments for Pacific Cod (Gadus macrocephalus) and Pacific Hake (Merluccius productus), and is currently a member of the technical committee for the 2014 assessment of Arrowtooth Flounder (Atheresthes stomias). She has been Adjunct Faculty at UBC since July 2011 and maintains links with UBC through the Canadian Fisheries Research Network (http://www.cfrn-rcrp.ca/Public-Home-EN) and through collaborations with Dr Murdoch McAllister and Dr William Cheung.      Overview of reproductive characteristics and strategies among the Pacific gadid fishes

    Dr. Yasunori Sakurai (sakurai@fish.hokudai.ac.jp) is professor at Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University, Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan. His research focuses on reproductive biology, strategy, and stock fluctuations of gadid fish (walleye pollock, Pacific cod, and Arctic cod), cephalopods (ommastrephid and loliginid squids) related to climate change, and the biology of marine mammals (Steller sea lion and seals). He has directed a number of national research projects and programmes focus on ecosystem-based management for sustainable fisheries in Japan. He has been member of Cephalopod International Advisory Counsel (CIAC), Ecosystem Study of Sub-Arctic Ecosystem (ESSAS) and PICES Programme. Changes in fish and shellfish distributions are an important indicator of climate change and are being incorporated into national climate change assessment. However, fishing also affects fish and shellfish distributions and fishing effort is changing in many ecosystems. Changes in distributions will also affect fisheries, shifting the resource toward or away from fishing ports. We invite papers that examine the combined effect of climate change and fishing on fish and shellfish distributions and the impact of these changes on fisheries. Specifically, we encourage papers that 1) develop and use analytical approaches for separating the effect of fishing and climate, 2) evaluate life history and fishery traits that are associated with shifting distributions, and 3) examine the effect of shifting distributions on fisheries, fishing communities, resource economics, and international allocation.

Of particular interest to PICES and ICES will be the findings of the reports with respect to impacts on marine ecosystems.     Ocean acidification: Trouble for ocean ecosystems

    Dr. Richard A. Feely is a NOAA Senior Fellow at the NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle. He also holds an affiliate full professor faculty position at the University of Washington School of Oceanography. His major research areas are carbon cycling in the oceans and ocean acidification processes. He received a B.A. in chemistry from the University of St. Thomas, in St Paul, Minnesota in 1969. He then went onto Texas A&M University where he received both a M.S. degree in 1971 and a Ph.D. degree in 1974. Both of his post-graduate degrees were in chemical oceanography. He is the co-chair of the U.S. CLIVAR/CO2 Repeat Hydrography Program. He was a past member of the Steering Committee for the U.S. Carbon and Biochemistry Program and he is presently a member of the U.S. Interagency Working Group on Ocean Acidification. He is also a member of the International IMBER-SOLAS Ocean Acidification Group. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Oceanography Society. Dr. Feely has authored more than 240 refereed research publications. He was awarded the Department of Commerce Gold Award in 2006 for research on ocean acidification. In 2007, Dr. Feely was elected to be a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union. In 2010 he was be awarded the Heinz Environmental Award for his pioneering research on ocean acidification.

    Meryl J. Williams
     Fisheries of the North Pacific: Pathways to Food Security and Nutrition

    Dr. Meryl Williams current interests center on delivering comprehensive public information on fisheries and aquaculture through AsiaPacific-Fishwatch, which she initiated through the Asian Fisheries Society. She is also a leader in the Society’s long running activities on improving gender equality in aquaculture and fisheries.
    Currently also, she is involved in several non-executive positions, including Chair of the Australian Common Languages Custodian Group on seafood sustainability, member of the Governing Board of the Institute for Crop Research in the Semi-Arid Tropics, and Vice Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation. In 2013 and 2014, she was a member of the team of the United Nations High Level Panel on of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition responsible for the report “Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture for food security and nutrition.”
    From 1994 to 2004, she was the Director General of the WorldFish Center, concentrating the Center focus on eradicating poverty, improving people’s nutrition, and reducing pressure on the environment. Prior to that, she worked in fisheries research in the Queensland State Government (Australia) and the Australian Government, and for the Tuna Programme of the Secretariat for the Pacific Community.
    Dr. Williams was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, Technology and Engineering in 1993, and awarded an Australian Centenary Medal in 2003 for her contributions in marine science to Australian society and government. In 2004, she was elected an Honorary Life Member of the Asian Fisheries Society. She has also written over 100 research papers, technical reports, conference proceedings and books.
    Dr. Williams holds a B.Sc. from the University of Queensland and James Cook University, a Diploma in Education from the University of Queensland, a PhD in both Zoology and a Masters in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Queensland.

Marine debris is increasingly recognized as a threat to biota in the ocean, which can have a range of socio-economic impacts from coastal areas to the open ocean. The majority of marine debris consists of synthetic polymers, or 'plastics', which readily float on the ocean surface or are suspended in the water column. Microplastics may be attributed to the intentional manufacture of commercial products or the fragmentation of plastic products. They can increase the bioavailable fraction of marine litter and act as a vector for the delivery of intrinsic or adsorbed toxic chemicals to exposed biota. Floating, submerged and beached debris have been documented in marginal seas and the adjacent coastal zone of the North Pacific Ocean. In addition, the North Pacific Ocean Gyre is known to accumulate floating debris in what has become known as the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch". Marine debris represents trans-boundary pollution which can also deliver associated chemicals and invasive organisms to regions far removed from source. The objective of this session is to present status and trend information for marine plastic debris pollution and its environmental consequences in the PICES region. Papers are invited that assess macro- or micro-plastic debris 1) hotspots in the PICES region, 2) source and input pathways, 3) long-range transport, 4) role as sink or source of associated toxic chemicals, and 5) biological and ecological effects. Recommendations on how to address growing problems associated with marine debris will be also considered.

    Marcus Eriksen
     Patterns of microplastic distribution in the global ocean and inland environments

    Marcus Eriksen is currently the Executive Director and co-founder of the 5 Gyres Institute. He received his Ph.D. in Science Education from University of Southern California in 2003, months before embarking on a 2000-mile, 5-month journey down the Mississippi River on a homemade raft. His experience on the river led to a career studying the ecological impacts of plastic marine pollution, which has included expeditions sailing 35,000 miles through all 5 subtropical gyres to discover new garbage patches of plastic pollution in the Southern Hemisphere.
    Still rafting, his most recent adventure sent him and a colleague across the Pacific Ocean from California to Hawaii on JUNK, a homemade raft floating on 15,000 plastic bottles and a Cessina airplane fuselage as a cabin (junkraft.com). The journey, 2,600 miles in 88 days, brought attention to the work of the 5 Gyres Institute, the organization he co-founded with his wife Anna Cummins. Together, they co-founded 5 Gyres, which is committed to marine conservation through continued research, education and adventure, studying and lecturing about the plague of plastic waste in our watersheds and in the sea.
    His first book, titled “My River Home” (Beacon Press, 2007) chronicled his Mississippi River experience paralleled with his tour as a Marine in the 1991 Gulf War. The experience of war, sailing across the gyres with diverse crews, and long rafting voyages, have led to a strong conservation ethic worth fighting for. “We must understand and define conservation as self-preservation – a rationale that crosses all boundaries between all people.”

    He has been involved for a long time in research and Monitoring in the Mediterranean Sea with more than 60 cruises covering All european regions with special focus on chemistry/ecotoxicology And marine litter. He was Scientific coordinator of various europeann projects dedicated to monitoring.
    He is Chairman of the EC/ DG Env/MSFD technical group on marine litter, National referent for the French ministry of the Environment (MSFD Descriptor 10) , coordinating the PERSEUS task 2.3.5 on marine litter and member of various International Committees (member of the UNEP/MEDPOL Cluster group on pollution/litter/ ECAP, Expert for the MEDPOL regional action plan on marine litter, NCEAS/Univ. of California group on Marine Litter).

     Results and lessons learned from joint beach debris surveys by Asian NGOs

    Dr. Sunwook (Sunny) Hong is a research scientist and President of Our Sea of East Asia Network (OSEAN) which is a non-profit organization in South Korea, dedicated to research, education, policy development, and international cooperation to protect marine environment from marine litter. OSEAN is a network hub for cooperation of scientists, governments, citizens, and private sectors.
    She received her BS and MS in Oceanography from Seoul National University and PhD in Ecological Engineering from Pukong National University. She began her career in marine debris issue as a researcher at Korea Maritime Institute in 2001 and has served as a country coordinator of International Coastal Cleanup since 2002. She worked for an NGO, Korea Marine Rescue Center and then founded OSEAN in 2009.
    Major themes of her work are seeking solutions to marine debris problem in Korea and Asian region and implementing efficient strategies: (1) understanding pollution state, sources, and abundant items through nationwide beach debris monitoring and citizen science, (2) understanding impacts on wildlife, economy, etc, (3) finding solutions of main contributors on the basis of decision-making process and community participation, (4) planning national and local government policies for prevention at sources, (5) educating and training stakeholders, NGOs, and school teachers, (6) cooperating with Japanese and East Asian NGOs to solve regional issues, (7) organizing International Coastal Cleanup and promoting for public awareness, and (8) encouraging private sectors to raise recycling of abundant items found on Korean beaches and to develop technical alternatives.

     Hazardous chemicals in plastics in marine environments and their potential effects on marine organisms

    Position : Professor, Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry, Tokyo
    Hideshige Takada was born in 1959. He received his Ph.D. from the Tokyo Metropolitan University (Environmental Organic Geochemistry) in 1989. He has been working in Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology as an assistant professor, an associate professor, and a professor for 28 years. His speciality is a trace analysis of organic micropollutants. The target compounds include persistent organic pollutants (POPs; e.g., PCBs, DDTs, PAHs), endocrine disrupting chemicals (e.g., nonylphenol, bisphenol A), pharmaceuticals (e.g., triclosan, sulfamethoxazole) as well as anthropogenic molecular markers (e.g., linear alkylbenzenes, coprostanol, artificial sweeteners, benzothiazoles, crotamition). His research field encompasses from Tokyo Bay and its vicinities to Southeast Asian to Africa.
    In 2005, Hideshige Takada started International Pellet Watch, global monitoring of POPs by using beached plastic resin pellets (http://www.pelletwatch.org/). He has been working with ~ 50 NGO and individuals who have concern about marine plastic pollution. International Pellet Watch tells us the risk associated with chemicals accumulated in plastic debris in marine environments and their potential adverse effects on marine ecosystem.
    Hideshige Takada is an author of more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and more than 20 invited conferences.

The advection of water masses and their associated nutrients and plankton is critical to biological processes within the subarctic gyres and on the productive shelf regions bordering the gyre. Cross-shelf and along-shelf advection regulate the supply of nutrients and plankton to these shelves, thereby affecting the productivity and species composition of the prey organisms that support higher trophic levels. Moreover, the advection of larvae to suitable nursery areas affects the spatial and temporal overlap between larvae and their prey and predators (match-mismatch dynamics). Advective processes have been linked to the recruitment success of walleye pollock off Japan and in the Gulf of Alaska, which benefit from increased retention within certain near-shore regions, and to recruitment patterns of flatfishes and crab in the eastern Bering Sea, which benefit from increased advection towards suitable nursery areas. Interannual variability in advection has long been understood as an important source of biological variability, while variability at shorter time scales (days to weeks) has only recently received more attention due to the increased availability of high-frequency observations and the development of high-resolution models. The main goal of this session is to explore how variability in the advection of nutrients, zooplankton prey, and early life stages at all scales affects the recruitment, abundance and distribution of subarctic fish and invertebrate species, including the potential to extend their range into Arctic waters. Regional climate models are a key scientific tool for understanding climate change at regional to local scale, which is highly relevant to considerations for many socio-economic impacts. Despite the apparent limitations associated with errors in forcing fields and uncertainties in downscaling techniques, regional climate models continue to provide critical information for regional climate change by filling the gap between projections by global climate models and demand for developing adaptation and mitigation strategies at highly resolved scales. This session calls for papers addressing the recent efforts for regional climate modeling such as developing novel approaches for dynamic downscaling, comparison between regional and global climate model results, detection and evaluation of regional climate changes in the North Pacific Ocean simulated by regional and global climate models, assessment of their uncertainty, and coupling of regional climate models with other Earth system model components such as biogeochemical and ecological models. The session aims to assemble and share existing expertise in recent efforts to regional climate models by providing a platform to discuss their limitations and reliability.

     Climate—Boundary current interactions: Stories from East and West

    Enrique Curchitser is an oceanographer based at Rutgers University in New Jersey, U.S.A. His main interests are the intersection of climate and ecosystems, regional climate impacts and numerical modeling. His current projects range from understanding the role of boundary currents in the global climate system to downscaling climate scenarios in the Bering Sea to trying to understand the low-frequency fluctuations in the global sardine populations. Some of his professional appointments include U.S. representative to the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) Physical Oceanography and Climate Committee, Co-chair of PICES Working Group on Regional Climate Modeling, and U.S. representative to the International Climate Variability working group on ocean model development (CLIVAR-WGOMD), the newly formed CLIVAR panel on upwelling and the U.S. CLIVAR panel on Predictability, Predictions and Applications Interface (PPAI).

     Introducing the MIT Regional Climate Model (MRCM) and its application to climate studies
    worldwide

    Dr. Im is a research scientist at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). Her work at SMART mostly focuses on the development of the MIT Regional Climate Model (MRCM) and the improvement of the regional climate simulation over the Maritime Continent. During almost 10 years including PhD degree, post doctoral experience, and current position, she has studied the regional climate change and variability using a dynamical downscaling technique. The overall goal of her research is to investigate the potential change in regional climate due to global warming and to produce higher quality regional climate information for comprehensive impact assessment.

     Application of a regional marine system model on the northwestern Pacific and the variability of the Yellow and the East China Seas

    Hyoun-Woo Kang is working at the KIOST-PML Science Office hosted by Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), United Kingdom since October 2011. His research background is ocean circulation modelling and is interested in the topics such as “interactions between global to regional models”, “The response of the ocean to the tropical cyclones and the role of it”, and “the climate projection of ocean state”. Hs is, in principle, a research scientist in Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) since 2003 but is now working for the coordination of research collaboration between the two institutes as well as with European marine institutes. Before joining in the KIOST, he spent a couple of years dealing with Indo-Pacific ocean circulation model focusing on the Indonesian Throughflow and the low latitude western boundary currents as a post-doctoral fellow at the International Pacific Research Center in Hawaii after he got Ph.D. with the coupled tide and wind driven circulation modelling in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea in Seoul National University, 2001. The key collaborative theme between the KIOST and PML is the ecosystem modelling and satellite remote sensing as well as observation of the biogeochemical variables in regard with climate change and ocean acidification. Besides the coordination of these collaborative work, he himself actively involves in the marine ecosystem modelling and drives the application and improvement of the POLCOMS-ERSEM coupled marine system model to the Northwestern Pacific Marginal Seas which is originally developed at PML.

     CORDEX and its recent progress for East Asia

    Hyun-Suk Kang is working at National Institute of Meteorological Research (NIMR) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). His expertise is in development of a regional climate model and its application for land-atmosphere interaction. Since 2008, he has been involved in CORDEX program and led the CORDEX-East Asia activity as a coordinator for East-Asian regional climate modelling community. He is also responsible for the research of seasonal forecast of KMA. He plays a role as a manager of International Coordination Office (ICO) of WMO Subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) project since 2014.

     Development of a Seto-Inland-Sea model toward operational monitoring and forecasting

    I am a researcher of Meteorological Research Institute in Tsukuba, Japan. I received my PhD in physical oceanography from the Kyoto University in 2008. My research interests are coastal ocean dynamics such as coastal currents, turbulent mixing processes, and tides. Currently, I focus on developing a high-resolution Japanese coastal ocean model for operational monitoring and forecasting by Japanese Meteorological Agency.

     Regional coupled modeling of the eddy-wind interactions in the California Current System

    Dr. Seo is an Assistant Scientist at the Physical Oceanography Department, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He received his Ph.D. in Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the University of California San Diego. His research interests span a broad range of areas including the ocean, atmosphere, sea-ice and land, and their interactions relating to climate. He is particularly interested in understanding the dynamics of air-sea coupled feedback on the oceanic mesoscale (10-100km) and submeso-scale (1-10km) regimes. He is the lead developer of a high-regional ocean-atmosphere coupled modeling system known as the Scripps Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Regional model (SCOAR). SCOAR is designed to advance dynamical understanding of multi-scale ocean-atmosphere-land coupling and to assess the influence on the regional weather system and climate variability. Insights gained from process-oriented coupled modeling studies are used for physically-motivated scalings and empirical parameterizations to benefit coarse-resolution models. Efforts for understanding regional climate process using SCOAR model also lead to developing regional climate change scenarios using projection and uncertainty information from global climate models to study practical regional-to-local impacts of the large-scale climate changes. Several recent studies and reports suggest that increased aquaculture production is essential if we are to meet the growing world demands for marine protein. However, the rapid current development of intensive fed aquaculture (e.g., finfish and shrimp), in both developed and developing countries, has generated concerns about the environmental impacts of these often monospecific practices. To help address such issues, Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) has been attracting global attention as a means to conduct aquaculture activities, while at the same time improving/rehabilitating coastal environmental conditions and improving the well-being of the people living in coastal areas. By integrating fed aquaculture with inorganic and organic extractive aquaculture (seaweed and invertebrates), the wastes of one resource become a resource (fertilizer or food) for the others. This "ecosystem-like" approach provides nutrient bioremediation capabilities, mutual benefits to the co-cultured organisms, economic diversification by production of other value-added marine products, and increased profitability and food security for the local community. This session seeks contributions and case studies of how to implement and conduct IMTA activities, in particular that reduce negative impacts to the quality of the local environment and improve the well-being of the local human communities. Examples of activities in tropical and semi-tropical locations are particularly welcome, as well as examples of general methods and approaches that can be applied in many different environments. This session is a contribution of, and towards, the work of the PICES Project on Marine Ecosystem Health and Human Well-Being (MarWeB).

    Thierry Chopin
    Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA): An environmentally, economically and societally responsible aquanomic approach to farming the sea with many variations

    Dr. Thierry Chopin was born and educated in France. He obtained his Doctorate from the University of Western Brittany, Brest, France. He moved to Canada in 1989 and is presently Professor of Marine Biology at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John. Dr. Chopin’s research focuses on the ecophysiology and biochemistry of seaweeds of commercial value and the development of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems for environmental sustainability (ecosystem services and green technologies for improved ecosystem health), economic stability (product diversification, risk reduction and job creation in coastal communities) and societal acceptability (better management practices, improved regulatory governance and appreciation of differentiated and safe products).
    Dr. Chopin has published 107 refereed papers, 20 book chapters, 39 non-refereed publications, 349 abstracts (presented at 214 scientific meetings in 36 countries on 6 continents), 1 English/French DVD, 1 YouTube video and has frequent contacts with the media (magazine articles, newspapers/radio/TV interviews and documentaries). Dr. Chopin is the Scientific Director of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Canadian Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture Network (CIMTAN).
    He is Past President of the Aquaculture Association of Canada, the Phycological Society of America and the International Seaweed Association. He is an advisor to the International Foundation for Science, in Stockholm, and a member of the Editorial Boards of the journal Aquaculture International and the professional magazine Fish Farming International.
    Dr. Chopin is the recipient of the NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation, the Aquaculture Association of Canada Research Award of Excellence, the New Brunswick BioSciences Achievement Award, the R3 (Research, Results, Recognition) Award of the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation and the Simply the Best Award of the UNB Associated Alumni.
    Dr. Chopin is also Honorary Consul of France and Chevalier in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques.

     Obtaining a social license for IMTA: Challenges and opportunities in British Columbia, Canada

    My research focuses on the social and environmental impacts that the development of coastal aquaculture has on rural communities in tropical developing countries. I have recently been involved in aquaculture projects in Thailand, India and Brazil. Currently I am Director of the Southern Oceans Education and Development (SOED) project (2007-2013), which is being undertaken in collaboration with Universidade Eduardo Mondale (UEM) in Mozambique and the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Brazil. Other partners involved are Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina (Epagri), Brazil,Instituto Nacional de Desenvolvimento da Pesca de Pequeno Escala (IDPPE) Mozambique, Instituto Nacional de Investigação Pesqueira (IIP) Mozambique, Ministério das Pescas, Departamento de Aquicultura Mozambique. The main goal of SOED is draw upon Canadian and Brazilian expertise to increase teaching and research capacity at UEM’s School of Marine and Coastal Sciences, in the areas of coastal zone management and aquaculture. Training is being provided in Mozambique, Brazil and Canada. The project is also developing a coastal aquaculture extension program that will help improve food security and promote sustainable livelihoods in coastal communities. Funding is provided by the Canadian Development Agency (CIDA) through its University Partnerships in Cooperation and Development (UPCD) Tier 2 program. Total project budget is $2,142,000.
    I presently sit on the Board of Directors of the Pacific SEA-Lab Research Society. This is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the development of Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture (SEA) systems www.pacifcsea-lab.com

    Dr. Susanna Nurdjaman is an assistant professor of Oceanography Department, Faculty of Earth Sciences, Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia. She completed her doctor degree at Kyushu University with supervisor Prof. Tetsuo Yanagi in ecosystem modeling. Her research interests and experience span a wide range of topics from physical oceanography to marine ecosystems in coastal areas and estuaries with observations and numerical modeling. Some research project about environmental modeling such as water quality modeling, sediment transport, plankton dynamic and so on. Currently she gets involved in research groups in SATO UMI implementation at aquaculture in Indonesia.

     The effect of multi-trophic aquaculture on nutrient loading in fish and shrimp ponds, Karawang Indonesia

    Dr. Suhendar I Sachoemar is a Professor of Coastal Oceanography and Marine Science at Center for Agriculture Production Technology, Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) in Jakarta, Indonesia. He currently serves as Deputy Director of Center for Agriculture Production Technology, the Division of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry. He also currently serves as national Group Leader of physical oceanography of Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) Asian Core Program to establish research and education network on coastal marine science in Southeast Asia, and as coordinator of Indonesian Sato Umi research group to establish sustainable development of aquaculture model within Indonesian coastal area, and doing a research collaborate with the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES). He also engage on the research of coastal and marine environment assessment using remote sensing satellite oceanography and field observation data for fisheries and hydro dynamics oceanography study, and research on creating new strains of fish that can adapt to the environmental changes. All research are dedicated to support national food security, increasing fisheries productivity, optimizing the utilization of both marginal idle brackishwater pond and marine resources, anticipate the impact of climate change and global warming, and promotion of national and international collaboration research of the Indonesian coastal marine tropical area. Dr. Suhendar holds a B.Sc. and a Master from Bogor Agriculture University, Indonesia in Fisheries, Environment and Natural Resources Management. He completed his Doctor of Science (D.Sc) in Coastal Oceanography and Marine Science from Kyushu University, Japan.

Dynamics of pelagic fish in the North Pacific under climate change

The goal of the workshop is to define a scientific framework to assess the dynamics of pelagic fish under climate/environmental variability. We will discuss the overlapping PICES and ISC science missions and outline a Science Plan for a multi-year collaborative effort. Climate variability affects pelagic fish distributions and migration, and ultimately pelagic fisheries, the level of impact depending on the persistence, direction, and magnitude of the variability. Survival and growth rates of pelagic fish are linked to oceanographic conditions, and changes to these conditions can have dramatic impacts on the composition of species assemblages within pelagic ecosystems, as well as the persistence and magnitude of individual pelagic fish populations. Understanding the links between environment and pelagic fish behavior, growth, recruitment, and production are paramount to understanding the impacts of climate variability. Pelagic fishes occupy surface waters of the North Pacific Ocean, from coastal shelf to open ocean ecosystems. Many of these species undertake large-scale feeding, spawning, and ontogenetic migrations linked to seasonal changes in water masses. For example, Pacific bluefin tuna use waters off Japan as a nursery habitat, undertaking an ontogenetic movement eastward to waters off North America where they remain as subadults for 2-3 years. Additionally, many pelagic species have environmental thresholds and preferences which limit the spatial distribution of a species. The most important environmental factors include oxygen, salinity and temperature, and because these factors generally exhibit persistent spatiotemporal patterns, the general distribution of pelagic fishes is known. Knowledge of these relationships allows for the incorporation of climate change into stock assessments, which forms the basis for fisheries management.

     An ecosystem and optimisation framework for fish population dynamics assessment under the influence of fishing and climate

    Dr Patrick Lehodey holds a PhD in Marine Biology (1994). He joined the Oceanic Fisheries Program (OFP) of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (Nouméa, New Caledonia) and became the Principal Fisheries Scientist of the OFP tuna ecology/biology section in 2002. He joined CLS in 2006, a subsidiary of French Institutes CNES and IFREMER, based in Toulouse, France, to lead the Marine Ecosystem Modeling activities and became Head of the new CLS Marine Ecosystem Department in 2010. His areas of interests include the modeling of ocean ecosystems and fish population dynamics, and the management of marine resources under the combined impacts of fisheries, climate variability and climate change. He is the main contributor to the development of a spatial numerical model (SEAPODYM), driven by physical-biogeochemical ocean models and integrating knowledge on micronekton and large oceanic predators (e.g. tuna) biology and ecology, with a quantitative approach to estimate key parameters of energy transfer and population dynamics. This model is currently integrated in an operational system to propose real time monitoring of exploited tuna stocks. Patrick Lehodey was a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of GLOBEC (2000-05) and co-chair of the GLOBEC/CLIOTOP (Climate Impacts on Oceanic Top Predators) program until 2010.

Linkages between the winter distribution of Pacific salmon and their marine ecosystems and how this might be altered with climate change

Pacific salmon (genus Oncorhynchus) are an important ecological and economic species complex widely distributed throughout the North Pacific Ocean. In recent years, there have been large, often unanticipated, fluctuations in abundance and survival that may be climate-change related. Understanding the causes of variable salmon production will be critical to predicting future abundance levels and harvest opportunities. This has been a major concern for the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC), which has responsibility for scientific research and enforcement for conserving anadromous salmon and steelhead trout in the North Pacific Ocean.
This workshop is intended to build on recommendations from a report prepared by the NPAFC/PICES Study Group in the spring of 2014. The workshop will bring together researchers in fisheries and oceanography to improve understanding of the mechanistic linkages between salmon and their ecosystem. Of the many topics of overlapping interest between the two organizations, it is envisaged that this workshop will focus on one question: Where do Pacific salmon go in the winter and why, and how might this be affected by climate change? Prior to the workshop, salmon researchers will assemble information on where chum and perhaps pink and sockeye salmon are thought to live during the winter including depth, temperature and salinity. Oceanographers and climate specialists will be provided these data prior to the workshop so that they can do preliminary work on the extent of the habitats suitable for salmon, both currently and subsequently based on various scenarios of climate change.

     Pacific salmon and steelhead: Life in a changing winter ocean

    Katherine W. Myers is Principal Investigator of the long-term (1953-present) High Seas Salmon Research Program at the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, University of Washington. The overarching goal of her research is to increase scientific knowledge of the biology and ecology of Pacific salmon and steelhead trout in the open ocean of the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea through retrospective, field, laboratory, and computer modeling research in cooperation with other scientists in Canada, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the United States.

    Temporal and spatial variation in growth factors of Pacific Salmon

    Hiromichi Ueno is an associate professor of Faculty of Fisheries Science, Hokkaido University, Japan. He received his Ph.D. in physical oceanography from the University of Tokyo in 2003. His research includes (1) temperature inversions in the subarctic North Pacific, (2) intermediate-water circulation in the North Pacific, (3) physical properties of mesoscale eddies including eddy-eddy interaction, (4) relation between mesoscale eddies and biological production, (5) physical environment of Chukchi Sea and (6) physical environment affecting growth of Pacific salmon. He worked at Argo group, JAMSTEC from 2004 to 2009 as a research scientist studying temperature structure and mesoscale eddies in the subarctic North Pacific from the view point of physical oceanography. After moving to Hokkaido University, he studies the relation between physical environment and biological production in the subarctic North Pacific as well as physical environment in the Chukchi Sea and in the global ocean. Last year he started studies on physical environment affecting growth of Pacific salmon.

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) have substantial economic, societal, and human health impacts in coastal waters worldwide, from equatorial to high latitude environments. Our increasing reliance on the economic services of coastal waters is threatened by the apparent increasing frequency and severity of HABs globally. Currently, clay dispersal in Korean waters is the only pragmatic operational program for mitigating HAB effects on coastal aquaculture operations. The trade-off, namely smothering of benthos with rapid sedimentation of clays, is not acceptable in many nations, leaving them with few if any mitigation strategies. This workshop will open with presentations on current rules for testing and implementing mitigation strategies in PICES member countries to set the stage for considering HAB mitigation. Participants then will deliberate on novel physical, chemical, and biological control strategies and research paths that have potential for minimizing or eliminating HAB effects without significant coincident impacts on ecosystem health. The aim of the workshop is to develop independent evaluation of mitigation strategies that are effective, transformative and sustainable for individual PICES member countries, and to provide a framework to advance the scientific collaborations and funding strategies to move mitigation research into the 20th century.

In the North Pacific Ocean, various cabled ocean observatories are operating or under development. In addition there exist several long-term time series programs, and the Argo drifter program. It seems timely to hold a workshop with the following objectives: set up plans for coordinated data sharing, data standards, common sampling protocols, and open access on the Internet; set out a timeline for developing an integrated (nearly) real-time synthesis of observations in the North Pacific by linking coastal and open ocean observatories and Argo; define a specific science challenge/question that could be best addressed through a network of observing systems in the Pacific Ocean.
Most of these facilities are in the North Pacific, and are regional and coastal in scope, making PICES the ideal organization to host such a workshop. The need for such a network of observing facilities was articulated in the conference description of the recent Joint PICES/ICES Workshop on “Global assessment of the implications of climate change on the spatial distribution of fish and fisheries” held in May 2013 in St. Petersburg, Russia: "… observations and model projections (are) needed to develop a global synthesis of the implications of climate change on fish and fisheries". In the past, correlations of sardine and anchovy long-term changes have been established between populations off California, Chile and Japan, so it seems prudent to make the scope of such a workshop the whole Pacific Ocean. The following format for the workshop is expected: a) a series of talks describing the capabilities of the various long-term systematic ocean observing facilities in the Pacific Ocean, b) a series of talks representing various modelling efforts around the Pacific and c) a discussion on setting up a group to develop a plan for achieving objective ii) above.

    Holger Brix and Burkard Baschek
     COSYNA, the Coastal Observing System for Northern and Arctic Seas – A regional, European perspective and the global coast

    Holger Brix is the Lead Scientist of the COSYNA (Coastal Observing System for Northern and Arctic Seas) project, one of the largest integrated measurement systems worldwide. He received his PhD in physical oceanography from the University of Bremen and the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Germany. His work as an Assistant Researcher and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of California Los Angeles, USA in marine biogeochemistry focussed on global carbon and oxygen cycles. In cooperation with colleagues from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, USA he developed a high-resolution global biogeochemical model for use in NASA’s Carbon Monitoring System Flux Project. Since January 2014, he works at the Institute of Coastal Research, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht in Germany, leading the integrated measurement and modelling efforts in COSYNA. His research interests include the study of physical and biogeochemical exchange processes between coastal regions and the open ocean and the applicability of regional coastal models on a global scale.

SOLAS into the Future: Designing the next phase of the Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study within the context of the Future Earth Program

For more than a decade, the Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) has fostered cutting-edge research in air-sea interactions, promoting communication, coordinating and directing research, and advocating for new projects. SOLAS has facilitated major advances, changing fundamental understanding in a number of subjects, including the significance of ocean acidification, the roles of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and marine organic matter in atmospheric chemistry, and the importance of sea-ice biogeochemistry in controlling air-sea exchange. At the same time, the significance of earth system science to society has become increasingly apparent, and Future Earth is replacing the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme as a major SOLAS sponsor. Within this context, SOLAS is plotting a new course for the next 10 years. This workshop is one of a number at various conferences that is soliciting community input into the future of SOLAS. In particular, we are asking the question: In a world where Earth system science is coming under increasing political and public scrutiny, what is and should be the contribution of SOLAS science to society? Ideas and conclusions from this and other, similar workshops will be incorporated into the new SOLAS Science Plan.
